Cusco, Paucartambo & Cloud Forest Adventure
Your adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Cusco between 5:30 and 6:00 a.m. Traveling in private transportation, you’ll first visit the fascinating funerary towers of Ninamarca, located at approximately 3,750 meters (12,303 ft) above sea level.
The journey continues to the picturesque colonial town of Paucartambo, known for its traditional architecture, colorful folklore, and charming bridges. From there, you’ll ascend to Acjanaco (4,000 meters / 13,123 ft), the official gateway to Manu National Park.
Descending into the cloud forest, you’ll discover an extraordinary ecosystem filled with orchids, heliconias, giant ferns, and abundant wildlife. A guided walk offers the chance to witness the spectacular courtship display of the Andean Cock-of-the-rock while searching for trogons, quetzals, and, with some luck, the elusive spectacled bear.
By late afternoon, you’ll arrive in Pilcopata, where you’ll spend the night at a comfortable lodge featuring private rooms, bathrooms, and hot showers.
Atalaya Port, Alto Madre de Dios River & Boca Manu
After breakfast, depart Pilcopata by road to the Port of Atalaya, situated at approximately 490 meters (1,608 ft) above sea level.
From Atalaya, board a motorized river boat for an unforgettable cruise along the Alto Madre de Dios River. During the journey, you’ll stop to enjoy the relaxing medicinal hot springs before continuing deeper into the Amazon.
As you navigate the river, your guide will help identify a wide variety of wildlife, including herons, kingfishers, vultures, the impressive King Vulture, and, if conditions are favorable, even the elusive jaguar along the riverbanks.
A midday stop is made in the village of Boca Manu before arriving at your comfortable rainforest lodge, where you’ll spend the evening surrounded by the sounds of the Amazon.
Boca Manu, Rainforest Trails & Birdwatching
Today you’ll continue navigating the Madre de Dios River toward a lodge located near the famous macaw clay lick.
Spend the day exploring rainforest trails with your guide while learning about the region’s unique ecosystem. Climb the birdwatching tower for panoramic views of the surrounding forest canopy and excellent opportunities to observe tropical birdlife.
The remainder of the day can be spent enjoying the peaceful rainforest environment before another overnight stay at the lodge, equipped with private bathroom and shower facilities.
Macaw Clay Lick & Return to Puerto Maldonado or Cusco
After breakfast, head to one of the highlights of the tour—the spectacular macaw clay lick. From a specially designed viewing platform or traditional catamaran, you’ll observe colorful macaws gathering in large numbers to feed on the mineral-rich clay, creating one of the Amazon’s most impressive wildlife spectacles.
Besides the vibrant macaws, you may also spot monkeys, reptiles, dwarf caimans, turtles, insects, and capybaras throughout the surrounding area.
Following this remarkable experience, return by boat to Puerto Colorado, a journey of approximately three hours. Continue by vehicle to Puerto Carlo.
Travelers returning by bus will continue to Cusco, making scenic stops along the route, including viewpoints overlooking the majestic Ausangate Mountain (6,300 meters / 20,669 ft), before arriving in Cusco at approximately 9:00 p.m.
Passengers who have selected the flight option will continue to Puerto Maldonado, where the tour concludes.
