From Cusco to the Cloud Forest and Pilcopata
Your expedition commences with an early morning pickup directly from your Cusco accommodations between 5:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. Boarding our comfortable private bus, you will travel toward the historic pre-Inca Funerary Towers of Ninamarca, situated at an altitude of 3,750 meters above sea level. After exploring these ancient chullpas, the group will make a brief stop in the scenic folkloric town of Paucartambo to admire its beautiful colonial bridge.
From there, ascend to the high Acjanaco sector at 4,000 meters elevation, which marks the official gateway to Manu National Park. You will then begin a fascinating descent through the mysterious cloud forest, an environment rich in primitive ferns, vibrant heliconias, and blooming wild orchids. During a hike through the forest, you will have the unique opportunity to witness the spectacular mating dance of the Andean Cock-of-the-rock. Keep your eyes open for trogons, quetzals, and with a bit of luck, the elusive spectacled bear. In the afternoon, arrive at a cozy, traditional lodge in the village of Pilcopata (550 meters above sea level), set apart from the town and equipped with mosquito nets, private bathrooms, and showers for a restful evening.
Pilcopata to Atalaya Port, Lake Machuwasi, and Paititi Lodge
Enjoy a fresh, delicious breakfast at the lodge before taking a 45-minute bus ride down to the river port of Atalaya, located at 490 meters above sea level. Here, you will board a motorized boat for a scenic 30-minute journey downriver to Paititi Lodge. The boat ride offers an excellent vantage point for spotting various animals in their untouched natural environments. Upon arrival, check into your traditional accommodations, complete with private bathrooms and showers.
Following a satisfying lunch at the lodge, head out by boat in the afternoon toward Lake Machuwasi. Here, you will step onto a traditional local catamaran to quietly navigate the waters, observing an incredible variety of birds—including the unique hoatzin—alongside monkeys, reptiles, insects, and dwarf caimans. If fortune favors you, you may even spot capybaras along the banks. As darkness falls, you can choose to join an optional night trekking excursion to experience the jungle in the dark, before returning to the lodge for a comfortable and relaxing stay.
Green Parrot Clay Lick and the Ancient Giant Tree
Set out very early by boat to reach a local green parrot clay lick, a mineral-rich cliffside where you can observe three to four different species of parrots feeding in their natural habitat. After this vibrant natural spectacle, return by boat to embark on an insightful trek through the primary forest. The highlight of this walk is discovering an incredible giant tree, surrounded by opportunities to spot wild monkeys, birds, small reptiles, insects, and dwarf caimans.
In the afternoon, return to the lodge to enjoy a delicious lunch and unwind. When night falls, you will have another opportunity to participate in an optional night hike, allowing you to explore the jungle’s nocturnal environment from a completely different perspective. Spend your final night resting at the lodge, utilizing the private showers and bathrooms for maximum comfort.
Return Journey from Paititi Lodge to Cusco
Savor your final breakfast prepared by our professional cook in the heart of the Amazon. It is then time to say goodbye to the Paititi Lodge and board the boat back to the port of Atalaya. Your private bus will be waiting at the docks to begin the drive back to Cusco.
The return journey takes you once more through the majestic, enigmatic cloud forest, giving you a final chance to admire its landscapes and reflect on your unforgettable adventure. The expedition concludes with an evening arrival at your hotel in Cusco, estimated between 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
